5-HTP AND L-Tryptophan
5-HTP(5-hydroxytryptophan) is a compound produced by the body from the amino acid tryptophan (also in Nocturnabol). It is naturally found and extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia plant. Ingestion of 5-HTP is primarily used to support increased levels of serotonin in the body (brain) naturally, which can be useful for various purposes including sleep and mood enhancement. In taking 5-HTP, increased production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine occurs. This stimulation, particularly of serotonin, directly triggers the production and release of melatonin.

Melatonin – as shown with 5-HTP, serotonin is converted into melatonin (5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine). By taking supplemental melatonin, we bypass this step and directly increase melatonin which is stored in the pineal gland of the brain. The pineal gland releases melatonin only during times when the level of light is low. For most people, this means that melatonin is secreted at night, during sleep hours. Once the morning arrives, light from sunshine signals the brain to shut down the melatonin production. The pineal gland also is intimately involved in the circadian rhythms that occur throughout the day. Several studies suggest that melatonin induces sleep without suppressing REM (dream) sleep. In scientific studies, supplementation with melatonin has been shown to assist at inducing and maintaining sleep in adults.
